Business Counterculture: Turn On, Tune In, Help Out

bobdylan“Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you?
People’d call, say, “Beware doll, you’re bound to fall”
You thought they were all kiddin’ you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin’ out
Now you don’t talk so loud
Now you don’t seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.”
Bob Dylan, “Like A Rolling Stone”

The reckoning is upon us.

And you have a choice.

You can join the movement.

Or be swallowed whole by it.

Check your buzzwords at the door: Transparency, Authenticity, Responsibility, Community…

and do something very, very simple.

Help somebody.

Forget personal branding and social media and marketing and search engine optimizing.

Just lend a hand to your fellow man.

See what happens.

Turn on to this new world that is transparent and connected.

Tune in to what people are saying to you.

Listen for a change bigmouth.

Help the customer late on his payment.

Help the employee down on his luck.

Just do it.

For 24 hours.

Then you can go back to freaking out.

But I’m telling you.

The counterculture is here.

And helping each other is what’s blowin’ in the wind.

Orange County’s Largest Mixer Recap

orangecountysmixer-ocevent0Let’s forgive the event’s organizer’s for the worst tagline ever.

I don’t know anybody in their right mind who would actually WANT to meet 3,000 businesspeople in one night who are in Ninja sales-mode.

But the point is made.

Lots of people, lots of exhibitors and a few that got my attention.

I didn’t even know that easyoc.com existed until last night.

They are making a strong attempt at being a destination site for all things Orange County.

Don’t know much about them, but may do a bigger post down the road if they are into it.

Spent a lot of time with Michellee Phelps and her brother Jonathan.  Cool cats.  They are opening Tanquil Tea Lounge in Fullerton in April.  They are looking for 8 employees who know lots about tea.  If you are interested check out OCJobTalk.

Spent a little bit of time with Candace Dozer from justClickmedia.   She was very engaging and friendly and they seem like good folks.  They provide businesses with the ability to communicate their internal and external marketing messages more simply, efficiently and effectively through direct response marketing.

I took an instant liking to  localsplash, an SEO and marketing company.

OK, yet another, I know.  There were quite a few SEO and marketing companies there all making big claims.

The difference with these guys was how they were running there booth and how engaged they were (very similar to justClickmedia).

Whether you are a believer in SEO or not, they presented themselves well.

No standing around with hands in pockets, sleazy attention-grabbing tactics or poor sales skills.

Here is what happened when I walked up to their booth.

The gal in front, looked at me and said…did you just tweet about this mixer?

And they had me.

I was Twittering my thoughts on the event and she was following it on her phone at same time.

Cool.

Then I met a couple of other passionate localsplash peeps before getting a glimpse of Steve Wiideman, who was holding forth with a prospect.  Wiideman is supposedley a true SEO guru who comes up first on a google search for seo expert.  Try it out.

And let me know what you think of SEO.

The rest of the event was pretty ho hum and while it was well-attended, I always get the sense that it lacks focus and that nobody really gets much business out of it.

If you did, please let me know.

West Coast University Innovates with Dental Hygiene Degree

dentist3Orange County is home to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene program, the first in the county and one of only four in the state.  The new program, offered at the Anaheim campus of West Coast University, was recently granted approval to launch by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.  The 33 month program will begin in April, 2009.

OK, so that’s the opening of the press release I received recently and tossed to the side along with the others.

But then I picked it up again.

Why?

Two reasons:

1.  A small university is essentially a small business and this one is innovating.

2.  People are hurting in this economy and looking for career changes that are practical and can make them some real money.

After graduating from a program like this (the only one of its kind in the country, by the way) you can come out of it making $35 an hour.

That’s $72,000 a year.

Not bad.

Check out Dept. Chair (and small biz innovator) Debi Gerger:

“We are pleased and complimented by the approval of West Coast University’s Dental Hygiene program, which strengthens our reputation for being a leader in health care education.  This program launches at a time when, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental hygiene is one of the nation’s fastest growing professions, with above-average job growth predicted through 2014.  Particularly in this current economy, our program will be appealing to individuals interested in pursuing long-term, professional opportunities.”

West Coast University joins USC, the University of the Pacific, and Loma Linda University to be one of only four universities in California offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene.  The program at West Coast will offer a year-round, multiple start schedule enabling students to complete their dental hygiene educational requirements in less than three years.

West Coast University has invested heavily to provide a first rate dental hygiene program which includes the latest technology in dental simulation laboratories with fully equipped workstations and artificial patients that can be manipulated like a human patient for the most realistic, pre-clinical learning experience possible.  During clinical sessions, students learn to use a dental software system while providing a variety of patient services.
Students complete their skill set by learning how to take and interpret x-rays in the digital and traditional radiography clinic.  General education and prerequisite courses are built directly into the West Coast University Dental Hygiene program forming the first six quarters of a student’s educational experience.
Students who have already completed these fundamentals may be eligible to receive transfer credits enabling them to begin dental hygiene core courses sooner.

The “initial accreditation” granted to West Coast University by the Commission on Dental Accreditation confirms the new Dental Hygiene program has met regulatory standards and will be revisited in Fall of 2010 after being fully operational for over one year.  The 2010 visit will allow the Commission to review the program in operational mode and, upon meeting regulatory standards once again, move the Dental Hygiene program toward their full accreditation.

“Our Dental Hygiene program was created to provide a top caliber educational experience, and we anticipate attracting top caliber students.  While some graduates with a Bachelor of Science Degree may transition into clinical practice, others may work in alternative settings or continue their education to expand their career options,” Gerger continued. “The rewards of a career in dental hygiene include working with people, enjoying a flexible work schedule in a variety of professional settings and an attractive income with broad career opportunities.”

West Coast University is a leader in health care and nursing educational programs. It offers a dynamic and experienced faculty and staff and academic curricula designed to challenge students and prepare them to become valuable members of the health care industry – for life.

Crawl Through a Sewer Pipe and Save Your Small Business

shawshank

Redemeption: def. 2. Recovery of something pawned or mortaged.

It is time to channel Andy Dufresne from Shawshank Redemption.

A master salesman, connector, maven, financial guru, talker, doer, persister, crawl-through-a sewer-pipe-to-realize-your-dream kind off guy.

Take an ounce of Andy and see what you can come up with in this brave new world.

We are witnessing an upheaval like no other and every small business owner who is not somewhat fearful should have their head examined.

But it is also a time to get mad.

To be redeemed.

Because many of you have been doing  the right thing all along.

You may even feel like you’ve been convicted of a crime you did not commit.

And now you are in the prison yard, surrounded by the hopeless.  Those, perhaps, who do not mind being in prison because it excuses them from making it in the real world.

But you have a choice:

Get busy living or get busy dying.

You are now surrounded by some imposing walls that can absolutely imprison you if you allow it.

And there are very few escape routes.

But the good news is that all you need is a small rock hammer, imagination and a truckload of persistence.

Yesterday, I visited a small Orange County business I love called The Wine Artist.

It was quiet when I walked in and they had an appointment in a couple of hours.

And what were they doing with their time?

Brainstorming.

Major brainstorming on how they were going to generate NEW revenue from NEW sources over the next six months.

They questioned their old way of thinking.  They revamped their pricing and got creative with cost cutting.

They were not taking this economy lying down because they had been doing so many things right.

And they felt wronged by circumstances beyond their control.

And now they wanted redemption.

And THAT is the attitude which will lead to clever new strategies that may or may not work in the end.

But you have no choice.  The world we are in now demands more resposibility from you than ever.

You MUST get creative.

You MUST abandon old ways of thinking and status quo activities.

Embrace the best in you and all that firepower that is your mind.

That is what it is going to take, along with the willingness to crawl through the sewer pipe.

I started this blog because of people like those who own The Wine Artist.

Because they get busy living and light the way for the rest of us to follow.
