Mashable cited a study today by Webtrends that confirms what we already know. That Facebook ads (if done right, and for a small business that is a big IF) outperform banner ads by a factor of 5. It’s important because there has been a massive backlash on Facebook ad effectiveness because the click through rates can, at times, be abysmally low. But you have to create a great ad and target correctly and have a proper landing page to make it all work.
A little Friday Fun: So we have some friends who are considering leaving Orange County for Portland, Oregon. We showed them this video.
A huge chunk of the $1.86 BILLION in revenue that Best price for generic viagra made last year came from self-service advertising. About 60% of it according to eMarketer.
The self-service system on Facebook is the easiest way for a Brand biaxinto reach a highly targeted segment of the Facebook population. You can limit your budget, turn your ad on and off, only pay if your ad gets clicked, edit your ad and split-test it too. Split-test? We’ll cover that another time.
You can’t ignore where everyone is hanging out. It’s like walking by a busy restaurant when you’re hungry and claiming the food in there is no good.
After all, you’re hungry for sales and the old ways aren’t working. In the meantime, here are all these people sitting around talking to each other and telling you what they are interested in.
And that is the key.
Where else are you going to be able to target people based on their interests, geography, age all at once for maybe $5 a day?
Here’s the catch though. You can’t go in thinking it’s an ATM. Facebook advertising is more of a lead generation tool than anything else. It’s not going to close the deal for you. If you are good at closing hot leads you should jump all over it.
But you have to be smart about the ad you create. It better be a great offer. And it should have a good landing page. And that landing page has to shout at them to take one action and one action only.
You may need help doing that.

Great article from Reuters on small business advertising and Facebook here.
This is an update to an earlier post.
Bryan just officially secured Seth Godin to speak in Orange County on Wednesday March 2. Great work Bryan! If you would like to attend you can buy tickets here.
You would be hard-pressed to find a more formidable marketing talent in Orange County than Bryan Elliott.
Bryan has created two massive social networks for Orange County, LinkedOC and SoCal Action Sports Network. If you visit his LinkedIn profile, you’ll see that there are a lot of influential people that think very highly of his smarts, energy and commitment to community values.
Bryan works his tail off and is the kind of entrepreneur Orange County needs more of.
In fact, if you are looking at all with open eyes at the future of work, Bryan embodies a modern approach.
He does not sit around waiting to take orders, to be told what to do or complain that there are no jobs out there.
He imagines, creates and executes.
He just does it.
Seth opens up this blog post on The Lizard Brain with the following:
“How can I explain the never-ending irrationality of human behavior? We say we want one thing, then we do another. We say we want to be successful but we sabotage the job interview. We say we want a product to come to market, but we sandbag the shipping schedule. We say we want to be thin but we eat too much. We say we want to be smart but we skip class or don’t read that book the boss lent us.”
It’s a great book. It sits next to my desk every day with dog-eared hand-written notes inside it. It is everything you need to know to get off your ass and make something happen.
Which leads me to the purpose of this post…Bryan is battling his own lizard brain and yours and mine too, to try and get Seth Godin to speak in Orange County on March 2nd. Here is the info:

Ever have one of those days?
When you run a small business, sometimes you think the whole world is against you.
You feel like an 8 year old girl singing the national anthem when suddenly her microphone cuts out.
In reality there is probably one lone jerk (listen for her laugh) who does enjoy seeing you screw up.
But the vast majority of people want you to succeed.
Because then they can bask in your success and you can offer them inspiration and a road map out of the jungle of mediocrity.
We all aspire.
No one sets out to screw up.
The more you realize that we’re all pretty much striving for the same thing, the easier it will be to keep your faith when things go wrong.
Stop-motion graffiti artist Blu knows how to do it.
