Overtaken By Circumstances

The waves just keep coming and everyone is getting swept up by them. Some are able to ride them out and others are getting crushed and being driven to the bottom. We are going to spotlight in the next post a few of our friends who are making a go of it and what they are doing to offset the slowdown in spending by consumers. We are also going to be talking a lot about a great “customer experience” management tool – Promoterz – that we stumbled upon recently. It seems like a very effective way to generate positive word of mouth advertising and get a handle on how your customers perceive your services/product. More to come.

What Would This Guy Do?

The iconic Bill Lumbergh of Office Space fame is the exact person we all need to model at a time like this.

Not because he is the embodiment of every horrible boss anyone has ever had, but because he is a guy who totally, completely 100% has the blinders on. You can’t convince this guy of any other reality except his own. Hey Lumbergh! The economy is in the crapper! Yeah…I’m gonna need you to come in on Sunday…

In the meantime the Wall Street Journal darkens our doorstep with an editorial entitled The Age of Prosperity is Over.

So what’s a small business person or entrepreneur supposed to do? Crawl up in a corner and cry? Or pull together some personal mosaic of every arrogant jerk you’ve ever met and spit into the wind. Channel your inner Lumbergh. Because if you can get through this (and not everyone will) you can get through anything.

Cash Squeeze

It’s not just talk. I’ve got buddies with businesses that have great cash flow and they can’t get a lousy $50K line of credit. The window is closed. Everyone’s sales are down and the outlook for a holiday pick-up is bleak. Most people just don’t have as much in their pockets right now. Couple that with a gut-wrenching 401K statement, the bailout, the distraction of a presidential race and a general fear of the unknown and it’s going to be tough for any entrepreneur or small business to weather this storm. Gotta keep the current customers happy and wow the new ones.
