Java City is a Coffee Shop That Creates Community

by Steve Averill on November 12, 2009

javacity_hotcup178Our Java City coffee shop on Culver in Irvine, is a favorite spot for lots of local folks.

It’s a haven of home-grown neighborliness that deserves every star it gets on Yelp.

It’s a cute little place to walk into and the product is consistent.

There’s a regular gathering on the weekends, featuring sleepy parents, dog owners, cyclists, students, middle-aged golfers and future soccer stars.

Java City knows how to create, design and market a  great product.

But the best asset in Irvine is the staff.

Many have been there for years and know our family by name.

If my kids aren’t with me, I am asked how they are doing.

And that keeps me coming back.

Of course, if the coffee sucked, I would not.

But the coffee is great, and they are great and so I gladly fork over my cash.

It seems so easy.

Make a great product.  Hire great people.   Tell a great story.

Wash.  Rinse.  Repeat.

If you take care of the first two, we will take care of the third.

Think of how many great products and services were launched by word-of mouth alone.

Community is built by word-of mouth.

And once you have that, once you have a true community, you have something very, very special.

Something people want to be a part of.

Cause it makes them feel good.

When was the last time that happened?

When was the last time a business  made you feel good?

I think this link is relevant to this post on independent coffee houses: http://www.delocator.net

Type in a zip code and find independent shops. Coffee, books, music, movies, organic food

“Instead of using the online store locator (for instance on the Starbucks website), you can use the Delocator to find and support independent businesses.”
